Ray-Ban 12k Gold Filled Double Gradient Mirror Aviator Sunglasses
1 Vintage Ray-Ban 12k GF 52mm Double Gradient Mirror (DGM) aviator sunglasses c 1960s - early 1970s are one of the most sought after styles of any vintage Ray-Bans, as very few 52mm were made over only a short period of time in B&L Ray-Bans 60 year history before the brand was sold. The Bausch & Lomb gradient density lenses were one of history's most important innovations in sunglasses and optics, lenses that were "filmed with a metallic coating to obtain a vertical density gradation. This coating is hard and durable, and with reasonable care will remain in good condition." These were so new at the time of first production that the linen cloth that came with them suggested that you "make sure that this sun glass is properly aligned horizontally before your eyes, so that equal densities are encountered by both eyes." The darker area horizontally across the center with flash mirror coating top and bottom makes it easier to read and see LED screens and were initially developed with pilots in mind who experienced severe glare but needed to see the instrument panels. The top of the line B&L Ray-Ban 12k GF frame helps to date them and indicates that 1/10 the metal in the frame was 12k gold, all on the external plating of course. The unisex Ray-Ban 52mm aviator frame is particularly well suited for women and those with smaller faces and measures approximately 5.0" temple to temple, and the G-31 double gradient mirror mineral glass lenses measure approximately 2.125" x 1.675" at the widest points. The top of the nose bridge is impressed either B&L Ray-Ban USA or Ray-Ban depending on the specific year of production and the bottom of the bridge is impressed B&L 1/10 12k GF. Very rare and hard to find.

2 Identical in appearance, the vintage B&L Ray-Ban 10k GO (Gold Overlay) 52mm Double Gradient Mirror sunglasses were made a few years earlier than the 12k GF model above c late 1950s - early 1960s. The top of the nose bridge is impressed B&L Ray-Ban USA and the bottom of the bridge B&L 1/30 10k GO USA. Equally rare.
