American Optical Ful Vue Steel Mesh Steampunk Goggles
Vintage American Optical steampunk goggles started life as safety goggles but today are worn mostly as motorcycle and open air goggles with one of the most striking and eye catching looks you'll ever see in vintage fashion. The stars of the show here are the steel mesh side blinkers that rotate inward to permit the glasses to fold up; interestingly enough, the ear stems fold the opposite way from most sunglasses to enable a thin profile when folded even when the side blinkers are on. These vintage steampunk goggles c 1940s were made in the years around World War II when Bausch & Lomb contracted with American Optical to help them produce their Ful Vue goggles given the war production demands that were being placed on both companies. The rubber coated ear stems were useful both in extreme cold weather to keep them from sticking to the skin, and they also gave an added bit of protection to the wearer who may have worn these goggles in performing some hazardous duties. The silver plated frame looks great with the early Bausch & Lomb or American Optical green mineral glass lenses, and both lenses are laser etched with either the early BL2 or AOM mark. The unisex Ful Vue frame measures approximately 5.0" temple to temple, and the lenses measure approximately 1.875" x 1.875" at the widest points. The rear of the nose bridge is impressed Ful Vue and AO2, part of the collection of a major west coast TV actor, motorcycle rider, and long time customer of the Vintage Sunglasses Shop.
